Doug raises some pretty good questions here. I was thinking about them in
terms of Automobiles and Microsift. ( I now sift thru to see if there is
anything worthwhile)
let's seee....... What purpose do the Gcode standards serve?
I guess really nothing. Kinda fits in to MS's way of doing things. You have
to get just enough varietys out there to screw things up.
Why would a manufacturer want to adhere to standards?
Well, "standards" are indeed "out". Remember when a Volvo looked the same for
like 20 years straight ? And, my '66 olds back then really was the same Olds
in '68 with a new set of lights front and back. Sure loved my '68 Chev
truck..... That was the same up to '72. Full size chev vans,... Had lots of
them. Really the same truck from 1971 to 1995. Those days are long gone.
If you really want to make the Big Bucks these days you have to ignore
standards and come out with something totally different, totally unconnected
to any prior version. Pump all your extra cash into advertising. Convince
your audience they need, yes can't live without, the "New and Improved".
Pretty soon you will have brand new autos and Operating Systems every 6
months. Of course they will not be as good as they could be.
