Some "standards" don't really matter, like the particular arrangement of tail
fins on 1960's cars. But, to stay in the metaphor, what if somebody sold
a car that needed 140 Octane gas, had green stop lights, red headlights,
and the turn signal flashed on the side away from the direction of the
turn? Would this confuse other drivers? What if it had a track of 15
feet? Could you still drive it around town? Only with pickups with flashing
lights and big "wide load" signs to accompany you.
