Sounds like the thru hole is just to reduce weight. I do see where a piece
of tubing would help. You don't really need to turn 10" of length. Just
turn the space between the bearings. That would only be about 6" (18-10-2
=6). Turning the OD for the bearings and relieving a few thou. between
the lands could all be done between centers in one setup in about 10
minutes.
