Silicon Carbide is normally a very soft wheel that wears fast. It is
used for grinding carbide where you need the wheel to expose new fresh
sharp grains rapidly as the material you are grinding will dull them
quick. Basically you use soft wheels for hard materials and hard wheels
for soft materials. For grinding steel you use aluminum oxide wheels
(many brandnames). My understanding of friable is that the grains
fracture to expose many sharp cutting surfaces.

Awhile back I purchased some 40 taper tooling for my mill, but now
that I have a chance to try them out, I'm finding that some the
flanges are of varying widths or non-existant on the larger holders.
I have a Quickchange spindle that is not hollow (Bridgeport series II
CNC circa 1978), so the drawbar that would save me, can't be used.
I'm bummed as all they had to do was make the spindle accept an
optional drawbar and it would have been alot more versatile.

Well the meaning of this saga is to attempt to machine or grind the
flanges into these 'hardened'( this is the rub) holders that have
more than enough material to do this.

Thanks,
Lee
