Hello gents,
I like the idea of open sourced EMC. The price is even better, but I am
dismayed that we need to jump so many hoops to get this system running. I'm
the first to admit how vastly PC hardware can vary. However, being open
architecture should not mean it is more difficult than simply dropping in a
CD and configuring the various I/O. Maybe I missed something in reference to
Linux's GUI. Cannot we maintain EMC's functionality in a MS-DOS environment
for example? I think even hobbyist would not want their CNC to "crash" in
any circumstance. I would not risk running another task along with the CNC.
(PC's are so cheap) If partitioning and multi tasking is not an issue, what
is there that Linux or OS/2 offers versus a more basic approach? Obviously,
Win 95/98 will not work. I'm not a software guru and so my views will differ
from the software guys. I just wanna have fun making chips. Making a few
dollars would not hurt. I will go for EMC soon but I cringe at the time I
know I will have to allocate to this task.

TIA
Peter
