This is an idea that's been around for many years and for the reasons stated
by Mariss it has not as far as I am aware found commercial favour. The other
problem is that of serviceability - the drive electronics are generally the
part that fails (due to being run closer to limits and having far less
overload capability than most motors) and to have to access them on the
back of a motor will just make life even more difficult.

Steer clear would be my recommendation.
