Chris,
If the hardware is designed around something like EMC's "canonical
functions" (The lowest common denominator set of cnc needs, one
exmple of which might be "move from here to there following a linear
path"), adding features to a GUI is possible and even easy.
Like so many other design issues, "the devil is in the details".

P.S. This stuff we're talking about is not new, or unusual. It is
simply currently more expensive than most on this list commmonly
think is "affordable". Take a look at some servo motion chipset and
motion card sites to get a feel for the "black box" in action. Try
cybernetics, PMD, Galil to start...
