Here are a couple more lazy ways to get that counter;
Radio Shack sells a cheapo (under $20) LCD counter. I think it is rated for
7 pulses per second, but I have used it up to about 50 without problem.
Don't know how fast it'll go ultimately.
For a real cheap, and slow counter- pick up that 8 digit 4 banger calculator
from the junk heap. Open it up, find and solder two wires to the += key.
These connect to your counting contacts. Manually enter 1 then count away.
It really works.
