Hi Ed

Emcsim is a simulation mode and does not normally output anything on the
parallel port(s). To use the other icons, you'll need to log in as root or
from the command line, type the following

su -
cd /usr/local/emc
./emc.run

Note the case, hyphens, dots, and slashes. Linux is case sensitive, and also
fussy about which "user" can execute certain commands. Once you have gotten
to grips with EMC and linux, there are some usefull FAQs on setting up a
"user" to run EMC instead of root.
