Well the first thing to do is to go buy a ati or matrox graphics card.
The reason I say ati (no brand loyalty) is that I have used 5 year old
and older ati cards and chipsets numerous times with no probloems. Like
an ati rage chip, rage 64, rage 128 3-d. The two cards do not have to be
the same in any way shape or form. I have sucessfully run 6 monitors
using win 98 and me. I tried to do it on linux but I neither had the
time or the resources(knoweledge base)to get the frame buffer drivers to
work sucessfully on the seacond monitor. Ok thow in the new card and
start computer, go into bios and make sure that agp is selected as
primary video. Save it and start windows. It will load your drivers
normally and restart. When it restarts the seacond monitor will flic on
saying that it has been configured and will work. Next go into display
settings and click on the grayed out monitor. It will either ask you if
you would like to extend Your desktop to this monitor, or it willo be by
the resolution slider. A program running on the seacond monitor will
rember its monitor if you have it maximized in the monitor.
Have fun.

Could you please be more specific about what I need to add and how to do
it--remember you're speaking to a semi-idiot?
Thanks, John
