I found the hiccup in my data stream.
I'm using K-Kam-3 - windows based software. The software provides a
screen readout of position and plots the tool path in real time with
the output to the printer port. There is a setting to disable position
update. I tried it and my hiccup went away!. I'm now able to get
about 3.5 IPM before torque falls off and I loose steps. (Up from 1.5
IPM).
That Identified I can now work on increasing voltage in my L/R drive
circuit - plan to push to about 42 volts. This I can do quickly.
I'm on a limited budget so a chopper circuit and new motors (bi-polar)
will need to wait for a home made solution.
Thanks to all for the useful input.
