They should work just fine.

The motors that I use are rated for 1.6 volts. My power supply is 30 VDC.

One advantage is that there are a lot of surplus capacitors rated at 40
working volts on the market.

I have an opportunitiy to get a couple Slo-Syn motors,

NEMA 34 1.7 VDC 4.7 amps.

I know that Marriss says to power steppers 20X their rating, and that
the highest voltage offers more torque, but.... 20x 1.7 is only 34
volts.

Will these yield good delivered power or should I keep looking ?
