and if you need to use it, remember NOALOX sealant. it is a no-
aluminum-oxide sealant. Since aluminum will oxidize and weaken the
joint unless the proper metal is used in the connector, you need to
take steps. Check your local electrical supply house, and don't use
news groups (like this one) for all your safety issues.

any connector for aluminum wiring should be labeled as such, usually
with cu al to let you know it can be used for copper (cu) or
aluminum (al).

The houses burned down because the connectors were not so fabricated.

the normal heat from current and the normal expansion of the aluminum
in the connector created the condition where the aluminum flowed out
of the connector during a high current/heat condition, then as it was
no longer a solid contact, heated more the next time.

Remember that if your house burns down for whatever reason and you
did not follow NEC and local codes, your insurance may not cover the
claim. If you are neat in your work it will not draw attention, but
if you have really ugly wires all over, (like my shop during every
assembly) you will get the fire marshals attention. I actually got a
written warning from the fire marshal with the area cited as "DAVE's
DESK". Had an automation project with wires all over the place when
he walked in.
