The 'whitish' color you see may be tinning. Some cable is made from TCW
(tinned copper wire), yes, every single strand is 'tinned' for it's entire
length. While not as common as regular stranded wire, it is readily
available on the 'surplus market'. I regularly used that kind of hookup
wire in the 60's when I worked for BU__OUGH'S, Corp. We did a lot of work
making control cables that went into submarines and surface ships. And,
does it ever solder beautifully!!! (You can't ordinarily solder aluminum
wire with pb-sn solder).
