I'd go with the tapered-rail set up so many have suggested. I'd offer
this, though: Make the path slightly upward (against gravity), and use some
method of 'pushing' the 'train' of balls slowly enough, so that the ball
falls immediately at it's proper spot. Otherwise, rolling down a slope, the
balls would accelerate , building up inertia, and not falling in their
immediate opening.
