Jeff: Years ago, a job-shop nearby which had then only three of the
most-primitive CNC Bridgeports made (what would those be, "Bridgetts"? I
have no clue!), the proprietor asked me to cobble a "fourth axis drive" for
their Dividing Head. This is comparable to what YOU want to do. Their
machinists altered an extant dividing head, replacing the "handwheel"
(crank) with the stepper we agreed was logical choice, and I built the
driver-circuitry for it, the "control software" coming from a
then-still-in-business Commodore PET, the "start-wait-stop" signals being
handled via connections we figured out how to make to the Bridgeports' CNC
circuitry. A great learning-experience, and the job paid for itself with the
first contract that utilized the "4th Axis Accessory" for these 3-axis
machines.
It is relatively straightforward thing to do. I do not DO "CAM" and "G-code"
and all that, all the "CNC toys" I have ever done using PC's with home-brew
BASIC routines.
If you have some specific questions about how to achieve what you want to do,
try me. Just as long as it's not about G-code nor "formal" CAD-CAM, cause I
are an uneddikatid ignernt ol' boy, doncha know!
