Sure you can use an 8 wire motor as half coils and leave 4 wires as no
connects. Unless you think you may have coils that are connected or
shorted you will not hurt anything if you connect the parallel coils
opposing each other. The motor will just sit there and make fun noises.
This is one of the situations where I would set the drive to the lowest
amp setting it has and use a low voltage power supply. Once everything
is spinning properly up the volts and the amps.
