The utils I've seen for it so far, do it by cylindar, which is to say, one
partition equals N cylindars. You'll want to reserve two special purpose
partitions; One is for your, "/boot", partition, and should be number one
partition. It doesn't need to be more than one cylindar in size, as all it
holds is your boot up stuff, and you want it to be _first_, so that it'll be
master boot record reachable. The second will be your swap partition, and is
not normally user accessable, but is for system memory between boots, memory to
file system and back again chores, and etc., etc. What's a good size for a
swap partition, is an endless discussion. Make it as big as you're comfortable
with.
Make your remaining partitions as large/small as suitss. If you make any of
these, you'll want the biggest to be:
/bin, /home, /lib, /opt, /root, /sbin, /shlib, /usr, /usr/local, /usr/src,
/usr/lib, and /var.
You can get away with making just one big super-partition called, "/", however
that is usually reserved for finding out just how big a final system you want
to make, using the, "du", command to size the various directories once you've
set things up. Once you know about how much the various directories and
packages take up space-wise, you can assign apx sizes to a partition list, and
go from there, with a final fresh install, creating the partitions as needed.
