I am not an expert on dielectric fluids for EDM process but I am
investigating how to construct one for hobby use.
Information to date on the operation of the dielectric for Wire EDM
is that modern machines do use "deionised" water. When the electrode
(wire) is close enough to the part the dielectric is "ionised"
allowing the potential change of electrons to jump accross the gap,
thus melting the work at the arc point and blowing a small crater, or
eroding the work piece. The catch is that the dielectric is
now "ionised" and must pass through a filtration system and
a "deioniser". The filtration system is easy, but I am yet to find
how to deionise the fluid again. I believe you can run the machine
with the filter only, but performance will be degraded as the
reservoir of dielectric becomes ionised.
The plunge (sink) EDM process uses a dielectric similar in
consistency to kerosene but with a much higher flash point. I would
be interested to hear from anybody who knows why the two processed
use different dielectric media.
