You're thinking of light spectroscopy. Mass spectroscopy ionises the
material, accelorates it, then bends it through a magnetic field. The
material hits the screen at different angles according to the mass to charge
ratio. You'd use it to determine the actual mass of an element rather than
just see what's there.
