Setting Gecko current

Hello list,
This is my second attempt to post this question. I apologize if it
somehow gets duplicated by Yahoo.
Can the current sense resistor on a Gecko drive be set for an
unidentified stepper motor by the operating temperature of the motor?
In heavy use, do stepper motors get too hot to touch?
I am just finishing my CNC router using surplus parts, and I do not
want to underdrive an axis.
Many thanks in advance for your advice. This is a great list for
learning.
Best to all,
John Champlain
