Hi John,

Setting current by motor temperature is not
going to be accurate enough to get the most
out of you motors without damage. There are
magnetic saturation effects that may limit
useful current before overheating sets in.

Stepper motors do get hot in normal use. They
will get just as hot sitting still as they
will running except in the case where the
drive has idle current reduction enabled.
Typically a stepper motor can be run hot
enough that you can touch it quickly without
pain, but is too hot to keep your hand on
for very long. This is not a precise temperature
measurement, but then this is not a precise
way to set current. :-)
