I have a Sterling that I made some kind of deal for at Rutland. I just stuck
it on my mill-drill as it was. I think it may be a little long but not very
much. At that price I would have a Sterling in a heartbeat.
As far as the Shooting Star ruggedness I have had no problems with it. I
have not used the one on the mill very much but it should be protected
better than the one on the lathe. That one gets hit fairly often but has had
no difficulties. The sacle on the cross slide is pretty much in the open. I
haven't put a guard on it because it gets in the way but I do seem to hit it
with the tail stock more than I should. I am careful though and try to avoid
dropping a big block of iron on it. I would advise you to put a guard over
them if you can.
By the way if you don't have a DRO on your lathe get one. It makes it a
whole different tool. Not as nice as CNC but like when you put one on a mill
you never miss the old " Was that nine turns or ten ?" problem.
