I know someone who has used them for robotics
projects. The good points seem to be that they're
small, easy to program, they daisy chain on one serial
bus, and they pretty much just work. Other advantages
come from companion boards that provide more I/O and
allow them to work independently from a computer.
They are little on the wimpy side (7-10A cont, @ 48V)
when compared to Geckos for driving a Bridgeport sized
machine and I think they're more expensive. They have
a new chipset called CMC that uses a buffer to
synchronize the axes.
Their web address is: http://jrkerr.com/
I was hoping to use them for a CNC retrofit since I
like servos and the idea of controlling one with step
and direction inputs seems a little silly. The
problem is the abundance of good software that outputs
with step and direction.
To expand the original topic...
Does anyone know glue code exists to have EMC, or
another respected CNC program, control servos via a
serial line? From my quick look at the way EMC is set
up I bet this would be pretty easy to do but I'm not
the one to do it. Especially if I can get Geckos for
the same money that just work.
