Assuming light duty, wood cutting etc, I would use steel tubing
[8x16,10x12 etc] two rails spaced apart, seperated by same. Cap ends
after filling with sand. Sand will dampen vibrations and provide base
weight to counter load. Top surface of steel tubes gives you a place
to mount rails for carriage. Are you going to make this thing CNC?
