Bruce,
D connector pins are marginal to handle the current by themselves.
If I had a real desire to use computer type cabling (D connectors),
I would use a 25 pin and use 2 pins for each wire. Jumper pairs together.
Don't solder bridge them.
There's plenty for 3 axis', power and grounding.
Be sure to use the locking hardware.
Be sure you use a fully wired 25 wire cable.
Modem cables, 9 pin serial, 25 pin serial and 25 pin laplink are very short on wire.
