Don't feel too bad. I've been at this a while and just last week on
a board I made for a home project I put a 208 pin QFP package in 90
degrees out of whack.

Admittedly it didn't take me 15 hours to find it, but I think the way
I found it was worse : I noticed at roughly pin # 206 that I was in
wrong. Doh!!!! The pin to pin spacing is .025" and on this list, if
anywhere, you will have a feel for how small that is to solder on.

Without the proper tools these are impossible to remove and since
this was a home project built with parts I bought (in this case a
$180 FPGA) I was pissed.

Luckily one of the lab techs at a company I contract with had an SMT
reflow/rework machine and owed me a favor. It only took him 2
minutes to fix what it took me the better part of an hour to foul up.
