Yup, in this case, you were right, as he had really not fully checked what he
had done.

Well, I took him at his word, (and didn't suspect a chip in backwards),
so I was looking for how a change in layout could affect functioning.
Since I have done some extremely difficult power electronics designs,
where EMI from power stages switching tens of amps at hundreds of
volts was being produced only one inch from logic and analog circuits
working on 5 V or so, these sorts of difficulties are the kind of things that
come to my mind.
