It is not stupid to make a mistake and put a part in backward. I
have been building electronic circuits since 1964 (no comments from
the peanut gallery!) and I have personally found out MANY times that
semiconductors perform poorly when inserted backwards. Most contain
a magic substance that looks like blue smoke. When you let the blue
smoke out of a component it is no longer a semi-anything.

I respect your willingness to attempt new things and learn. Everyone
here is in some stage of beginning. The good part is that we all can
learn something new every day.
