I admire your ambition, but I think it is a bit much for a first project of
this type. I would suggest that you first build a scaled down version to
handle a 4" cube of Styrofoam. Start with 3 axes, maybe a gantry style
machine. After that is up and running, work on the additional 2 axes for
the head. This will be much more affordable and a great way to see what
could be improved over your original design. Though not a huge machine, it
would still be immensely cool as a working proof of concept. Once this is
working and you have software that suits you, then look into a larger
version. Lots of long nights of static, dynamic, and vibration analysis
await you if you want to do well, all hopefully double checked with FEA.
