Well, I hate to blow my own horn, but TurboCNC can do single axis
threading with the G33 word, using a spindle encoder for feedback.

The encoder has to be of the "one pulse per rev" variety however.
In the future I'll be extending this to support multiple pulses per
rev, but that isn't a particularly high priority at the moment.

It's been a long while since I've stood in front of a Hardinge, but
I seem to recall that some of their machines had a simple multi-slot
tach on the spindle already for the variable speed controllers.
Depending on how many spare parts you can find, it may not be a
difficult thing to tack on to yours.
