Tim,
The V cutters I see in the flyer and big book are non-relief blanks.
The user has to finish grind them to allow them to cut. As is, they will
only plow thru the material.
Proper engraving cutters can be had for a few $ more.
Sharpening these is not difficult, but requires a special jig and a flat
diamond lap wheel.
See the lap (for gravers) at Rio Grande Jewelry Supply for an example.
The jig is just a block of metal to hold the cutter at the tip angle and
allows rotation of about 180 deg. Rotation is stopped just before reaching
the cutting edge. So, the grind is conical almost up to the edge leaving
clearance and a sharp straight edge. The tip width and relief are done by
hand by just touching to the wheel.
