Hi,
I have used bearings which incorporate endthrust with some success and they
are as cheap as you can get. The ones I used were intended for the ends of
the brush roller on a Hoover Junior vacuum cleaner!! They have a cup-shaped
outer race, loose balls, and a mushroom-shaped inner race. If you use two
of these on one end of the shaft, with a small collar fixed to the shaft
between the heads of the mushrooms and then apply an end load to the outer
races by fitting them in a tube with a screw-in end cap, you can eliminate
end shake but the cup-shaped design of the inner race allows the screw to
tilt a little to accommodate any error in alignment of the bearing and nut.
The particular races I used are not too well finished but they looked better
after a bit of running-in and the original races are still working well
after quite some time.
You can, of course, do something similar with angular contact races but you
won't get the 'self aligning' quality.
Best wishes,
Ian
