My point is that everyone explains it from this direction and
that the explaination obfuscates the understanding. I can write
G-code from the start and I also have an XY table that is driven
by a wall-wart power supply, a couple resistors, one IC, and does
this from the parallel port.

This is true, but why and how does it vary. What hardware does
it use that makes it vary the implementation if it isn't a
translator in EEPROM or ROM that has the G-code standard embeded
inside. Why is this necessary? Why can't you just leave out the
EEPROM or ROM and design the circuitry without it?

Yes, but doesn't EMC do this or another final program that
outputs step and direction info to the parallel port?
