John,

You will need a 5 volt supply. The ground for the 5 volts supply will need
to be connected to one of the ground pins on the parallel port connector.

You can get the 5 volts from your PC or add another 5 volt supply. If you
look at my break-out board (www.campbelldesigns.com) you will see that the
break-out board has a built-in 5 volt supply.

In any case, you will need a 5 volt supply.
