was simply a gantry device flipped up, and a gang of air brushes each

Its downfalls were not being able to "vary" paint and air, (all ON or
all OFF), and the biggest downfall was inavailability of the software to
do anything but vector lines.
Something similar was the use of a thick goooey UV cure colored urethane
in a tube, that laid down "beads" of this stuff on acrylic to simulate
Neon when backlit. I forgot the name of this stuff but could find it.
The stuff came out of Canada and was quite popular. You can see signage
made with it even today, but, I do not know who is doing it. I know
PRECIX routers had a an attachment for it.
Of course that is all changed. Today, go to any signage tade show, and
you will see 20' wide billboard printers, printing raster images from
just about any PC or Mac. Other than having large sprayheads, I would
imagine it is not much different than a typical Inkjet printer. They are
incredibly fast, AND accurate. Oh,,, also reeeeaaall expensive.
Depending on what you would like to do, it likely can be accomplished by
a home brewer with todays software availability.
