There is more than one answer to think about here....
One Lifetime answer is "how long will it last under normal use?" -
which leads to ideas about prolonging the functional life....
Another answer, and I think just as important, is "do this fail
gracefully..?" when we are working with big equipment, or even a
nifty little Taig Lathe, you have to consider what component means.
Does it just go "poof" and stop? - a good answer. Or does it
fail "open loop" and shove your 58" Bridgeport table through the
garage, your neighbor's car, a tree, and everything in between...
seems funny the way I put it, but.....
years ago TVA (Tennessee Vallye Authority) had a power
generator "fail" and it failed "open..." It spun up, blew through
the side of a 5 story building and went across the Tennessee River.
This was a multi-ton generator.
So everything fails.... Its why I buy some things, instead of
my own. The lifetime quetion here is does it fail safely
and "gracefully". It's really important.....
