Jeff: I once ran a 1/3 HP 3-Ø motor off 240 single-phase using a
"motor-capacitor" of size which would result in equal current in the three
legs, but this was not optimum. Then I moved into a residence WITH
three-phase, so problem solved, and my whole shop is now 3-Ø. So I never had
reason to TRY any of the techniques in Carlson's article, but he is a sage,
so the reader may-well discover a practical way to use one of his
essentially-home-brew techniques. Here's a link:

In all seriousness, your best bet is to get your local utility to "string"
3-Ø to your shop! Threaten violence, if they balk! (Just joshin', of
course!)
