Sounds to me like when you reverse direction, the balls start travelling in the opposite direction and they bunch up together as they were previously causing the crackle sound as they hit one another.
Could be wrong though.

This being my first experience with Ball Screws,
I'm not sure just how normal this is?
Somewere I've gotten the drift that a certain
amount of crackle is ok.
I'm using Rockford 5/8" with Preloaded Ball Nuts.
When hand cranking:
Alignment is good and no noticeable binding and
travel is smooth and easy. Except I can lightly
feel the Ball Crackle.
I adjusted the Preloaded Ball Nuts by turning the
adjustment screw until the Wave Spring Washers were
flat, and then backed off just a little.
I made sure everything was spotless clean and applied
just a small amount of grease to the threads.
They crack useally only when I reverse direction for
a few turns.
