Well, I saved some money on the AC Tech drive. It seems that all three
Precise spindles I acquired had at least one phase burned out in the
windings. I checked the water jackets and all were hopelessly plugged with
gradoo. These early spindles didn't have a thermostat in them to report an
overheat fault back to the drive. Once the water flow stopped, it was toast
city. At least the price was right, they were salvage from a dumpster. Now
I know why they ended up there.
I opened up the spindle assemblies and saw there are a lot of appropriate
components for a DIY bench top milling spindle. Nice bearing housings and
labyrinth type seals. They use common Barden 103g angular contact bearing
pairs. A little pricey, but easy to find.
