A battery powered digital multimeter set to amps works just as well
when placed in series with a winding.

I have a Tektronix hall sensor clip-on current probe I use with a
Tektronix digital sampling scope. Works very nicely and I get a .bmp
file of the scope trace as well. Nice for analysis.
