I'm not sure what you mean when you say it cuts all the excess metal
away.

The cutter can only follow your tool paths.
make sure you didn't fill or hatch any unused areas.

Make an outline of your part. just a single line for the tool path.
do all your conversions
put in a piece of scarp wood the same size are your rough stock.
cut the outline.

then add more drawing features until you find what drawing features
do what you are looking to do.
