JS,
I would go with the ordinary pc with a good power stabilizer/surge
protector, i.e.APC brand. The reason I would do this is because of the
savings in cost, availability of parts, and ease of repair. This is based
on my experience as a production manager in various manufacturing plants,
currently in the lumber industry making oriented strand board (OSB). We use
a combination of industrial grade computers and normal pc, more normal pc's
than anything, controlling a lot of our processes. We have less problems
with the normal pc's on the dusty, dirty manufacturing floor (sawdust mainly
than we do with the industrial rated type controls, i.e Allen Bradley touch
screens and various other forms. The key here is down time is lost money,
the less trouble you have more the better, and when you have problems, you
want it easily and quickly repaired.
Hope this helps
