I don't know if it is still there but two years ago (could it be THAT
long?!) I posted a pulse circuit that uses two CMOS chip and will use
a joystick to control both XY axis's and speed is porportional to the
joystick deflection. It has ramp up and down settings and the
dynamic range is much wider than a 555 circuit. The output waveform
stays at a constant 50% duty cycle. It will sweep across about a
1000:1 frequency range and different ranges can be selected (slow,
med, fast) with a single resistor.

I love the 555 but it does have a somewhat limited range of speeds
with a given cap and resistor set. If you can't find it on the list
just drop me a line off list and I will send you a copy of the
schematic.
