Hi Chris,
Sounds interesting stuff.
Have you considered woven antislip mat - holds things flat without
slipping. sometimes marketed as (hand) router no slip mats. its about
50 cents a square foot in Australia in various bargain basement
stores.
It will leak air so a higher capacity vacuum pump wopuld be needed on
a vaccum table but it grips so well that a turbine pump (or shopvac)
should work ok.
