Check out drill rod an Enco, a 3 ft section, 1 inch dia is less than
$20.00, hard finish, not hardened.

Tolerances are off from precison rod, I got some that was a thou over
and would not fit pillow block bearings. : (

other than that, your idea is sound. just include some way to adjust
the tension.
