Well....
you could put the encoder on your stepper motor... and put some
calibration holes (small 5-7 mill holes) with reflective stuff...
around the circumference - then use a small calibration program to
correlate the two.
Do you have a stepper? or a John Deer hooked up? bound to be a
shaft to latch onto somewhere.
