being practical,
I recomend you considder the space and leave space for timing gears
and belt.
on the other hand, once you tighten up the chain, you will notice
very fast wear. belts and chains streatch very fast in the first few
hours. that is just the parts seating or stretching for the first
time. but after the break-in period you will notice much longer
times between adjustments.
I would caution against automatic chain adjustemnts as each
adjustment would require a rechecking of backlash and table moving
distance. for distance, think about a pin at each end of the table
and at each end of the bed. over all the way to one end and align
the pins, then move all the way to the other end and align the pins.
see how far you actually moved vs. how far you think you moved. set
correections in software accordingly.
Logic has it that if you are doing production, your wear will be fast
but if you are doing home stuff, it will last long. on the jobshop
side, put $2.00 an hour away for the 'up-grade' fund. don't mark it
down, actually get an account and put it away.
