Andrew,
This helps me get a little closer... I am collaborating on a series of
tutorials that will take a novice from start to finish creating a part in
CAD, defining the tooling and operations in CAM, and then setting up the
machine and cutting the part. My goal is to use standard steps and tooling
so that anyone can reproduce the steps.
It sounds, based upon your post, that insert tooling may be the best way to
go for this. If so, have you any specific recommendations for a supplier of
quality tooling for a small machine such as a Sherline? Whatever I use in
the tutorial, should be something that anyone can purchase, in case they
want to follow the tutorial precisely.

Eric,
Recently setting up tools in the 8 position tool turret of my Denford
ORAC to run under TurboCNC using G code generated by Dolphin, I
ground standard tool shapes to known angles & radii in HSS using a
T&C grinder (Clarkson). Even so I have resorted to an optical device
to measure offsets. I suspect that any of the imported tools will
vary far too much from sample to sample to be of use without
resetting. Probably the best way of getting repeatability is to go
for indexable tools from a reputable manufacturer.
