Any system is subject to abuse, but I kind of like it when established
members of the list are free to announce new, or particularly inexpensive
offerings of direct applicability to the projects we tend to discuss.
The big steppers certainly fall in that category. I suppose he could
have posted something along the lines of "I got a line on some big
steppers, email for price and info" but I'm kind of pleased that both
some of the info about their ratings and the price were included in
the post. Especially in this case where the price was so low - low
enough to make them tempting for an application where I really only
need something half as big.
Likewise, I enjoy hearing about what Dan is up to. Of course I check
his web site regularly - but when his 5A stepper driver is finished I
hope he will let us all know. And I think it would be convenient if
he were allowed to include the price in that post. Obviously those
contemplating buying one will be inclined to go check his site - but
it's usefull for those who don't have a current need for such to know
that it is out there, and at approximately what price, since such
knowledge might effect future planning of new projects.
I actually find brief posts from more commercial suppliers (those
"Email for ouy product offerings things") far more annoying, since I
can't quickly determine if they have anything useful in my price
range.
In conclusion, I'm firmly in favor of short but specific announcements
of products, kits, surplus, etc closely related to list topics - at
least as long as the list does not seem to be being abused for this
purpose.
But that's only my opinion.
Chris
(Obmetalworkingcontent: got my ballscrew bushing for the lathe
machined, but the bore is skewed so the screw is substantially off
center at the far end. Going to redo it this time making proper use
of the old 'bore the id, then turn the od concentric to that' trick.
Screw machined pretty well with carbide - found I could take heavier
cuts on the threads if I lowered the tool a bit below center. A bit
underneath the minor diameter it gets softer - I center drilled the end
with HSS and am going to try tapping it.)
